The reason why you should absolutely watch Orange Is The New Black
Although Orange Is The New Black has finished its first season and its reputation has been quite respectable I couldn’t make time to my schedule for it until recently. I dedicated the whole last weekend to this phenomenon. Yes, this may be a strong word, but it suits it perfectly. Orange Is The New Black is officially my new obsession.
I’ll summarize the plot in one sentence, for those who aren’t familiar with it. A midle-upper class girl goes to jail for a crime she commited a decade ago (helping her ex-girlfriend hundling drug money) and she strugles with prison life as she tries to maintain her relationship with her soon-to-be-married fiance.
The No1 reason why I adore this TV series is that the women that are being portrayed look and feel real. They are indeed everyday women, all with their bad and good side. They aren’t the “America-girl-next-door”. They are real women. Full stop.
In addition the way beauty is pictured is a whole new chapter. Each one of them has their own beauty in personal terms, that defy women’s magazines. It is liberating and truly feminine. From a sociological point of view the different body types in combination with the variety of original characters bring a fresh look to TV’s history by creating new role models that speak to the audience in an authentic and unique way. Furthermore, women are no longer the victims but the heroines of their world.
What is more, sexuality related issues have come under the spotlight portraying a wide range from straight, bisexual and lesbian to transgender women with respect and an open mind. While at the same time it is the only TV series that can be characterized as multicultural, with the same number of black and white characters.
To sum up they are all unique, swag and sassy and they try to survive in an underpriviledes world. If you haven’t watch it already start now! I mean it. If you have seen it wich is your favorite character? Lemme know in the comments below.
